I had a Peaceworks meeting yesterday. I enjoy going to them. They are very informal... it's a catch up one what people are doing, and what's in the works. I'm pretty isolated since I'm working from home and never really have anybody stop over, so that getting out to that type of thing is good for me. Well, back to what I planned on writing about.... Right before going to the meeting I decided I should set up another Greymatter account so that I could show the Peaceworks crew what Greymatter was like. So I set up the other account with basic login privileges. No problem. Then I decided to logout and login as the new author to make sure they would be able to log in and view the important stuff. With only the basic login privileges you couldn't see very much... so I decided I should give them all of the privileges... I can trust them. But when I go to login as myself (with all privileges) I can't remember the password. You see... ever since I installed Greymatter, I've had it do an auto-login which uses a cookie to keep track of the author and password... but when I logged in as the peaceworks user, it changed the cookie to that user and password. And with the gzillion passwords I have used in the past, I couldn't remember which I had used this time. Well I didn't have time to fool around trying to remember, I had to go to the meeting. I didn't worry too much... when I got back I could try again, maybe remember, and I had back stuff up a couple of days ago. However, on my way to the meeting, I realized that the password had to be somewhere in the code. Sure enough, when I got back, I looked at the files, opened up the gm-authors.cgi file, and there it was. I guess it doesn't really matter that it is so easy to find... you do have to have access to the server and all the files, and if you have that you can do whatever you want anyway (Note to Goyer: don't mess with my stuff please).

How To Change the Windows 2000 Boot Logo

I registered afterglow.ca with register.com and plan on having it point to my weblog (you probably noticed the afterglow logo). However, I went to change my DNS server, and it wouldn't let me. I have langeman.net registered there too, but am able to change the DNS for it. So I checked out the FAQ's and it said that the registrar on file is not register.com. I showed it to Goyer and he finds out (I think with whois or something) that my registrar is webnames.ca. So I try logging in there, but it tells me I'm registered through there partner, register.com, and I should ask for assistance from them. So I filled out one of there customer service thingys and will hopefully get something back soon (something more than the "Thank you for using choosing register.com..." blah blah blah. "Register.com has recieved your inquiry..." blah blah blah).

Finally switched over to the new design. It was really easy using the custom templates for Greymatter. Werever I reuse code, I just through it into a custom template and call that instead of writing all of the ugly code. I still haven't changed the about, contact, and links pages... I'll have to do that sometime :) .

The Greymatter Story: an interview with Noah Grey. He's the guy that made Greymatter, the tool I use for creating this weblog.

As I was checking out the Greymatter discussion board, I noticed that there is a php port in the works, courtesy of Thom. And it looks like he just got his own forum running today, were you can ask questions, request features, etc. It looks very cool. I love the features, functionality, and user interface of Greymatter, but would like if it had a better archival structure. Storing the entries as 00000030.extention just doesn't seem right. I like the idea of having it in a mySQL database. I also like that it will be in php since that is what I have been learning/using this summer as I work on Phormation.

On another Greymatter note, as I was checking out the stuff mentioned above, I came across this article that talks about doing RSS and syndication stuff with Greymatter and XML. I haven't looked into it too much, but it seems like a very cool idea.

I was going to change over to my new design, but ended up going over to 207 Erb instead. John, Emily, and Richella wanted to rent Wayne's World, but Farah's didn't have it, so we sat around and chatted for a while with the other 207 Erb people (Jon Bowman, Jon Kennel, Joel Keller).

If you are very observant, you might notice one change to the weblog... the files that are blog related have php extensions instead of html ones. This will let me through in some php scripting stuff into my pages if I ever think of something cool to use it with.

Yesterday... Tomato (the server) was down, so I couldn't blog. So what did I do? I cleaned up my room a bit... it's still messy, but better. I hung out a Grebel for a bit. Scotty was there because he had first aid training. We (me, Scotty, Janelle, Dave G, Ben S, Brandon, Becca G, Josh G) went out to eat to what we thought was Jose's Noodle Factory, but when we got the menu it said Loose Change Looiee's. We got confused because that's a restaurant very close to Jose's (and I always confused the two before), but then figured out that Jose's had been bought out. Apparently they're going to be changing the name to something else soon. I hung out in Doug's room and talked about his concerns about Grebel and the key traditions that he feels are not being passed on well as he is about to leave (A major one being the lack of new Ultimate players). We discussed the problem of with numbers that Grebel faces. This fall there will be 68 guys and 48 girls (not good). There will 67 returning residents and 49 new ones. Other important numbers... only 11 Manitoban's (concern for Doug)... 3 new people from the States (pretty good), one being from PA (very good).
