Well, I'll be leaving soon... going to stop by Grebel to staighten out a bit of business and then I'm off to Winnipeg. I probably won't be able to keep my blogging streak alive... a full week... but I'll be back Wednesday. 07.20.2001
Procrastination gets me again. I'm off to Winnipeg tommorrow to help my Grandma move. My mom got me the flight and everything, so no problem there. But without a car I need to find a way to get to the airport. It shouldn't be a problem... I gotten there before... just use the Airway Transit Airport Service. Only problem is they don't have any regular pickup times for Saturday. So I call them up and ask if I can make a reservation or something. Well, I'm supposed to make reservations 2 days in advance... but they'll see what they can do. It ends up that they can pick me up at the SLC at 3:20... it'll just be $54 instead of the normal $25 student rate. I didn't complain to them... but really... they're going there anyway... I'm sure I'm not going to be the only one on the airporter. Oh well, as people have been telling me for a while, that's what I get for my procrastination.
Americans Annoyed by "All This International Shit" On The Internet: I've pointed this article to some people already, but since SatireWire seems to be on a bit of a vaction, I decided to read it again. Still very funny. Note that I'm an "American" living in Canada... born and raised in US, duel citizenship, at Waterloo for university. 07.19.2001
Today I came back to my PHP/ODBC coding problems. I finally submitted a bug report to php.net about the weird behavior. Last week I got a reply about my message to phpbuilder.com from someone who was having similar problems. He found a work around which I've tried out. It gets me closer to were I want to go but I have to do the same type or work around to get what I want. I don't really like the idea of opening and closing my database connection every few lines... but it looks like that's what it will take. On another note, I bought a copy of Psychology Today the other day the conveniece store, when I had the urge for some ice cream and a magazine to read (got Bryers Reeses Peanut Butter Cup). The ice cream is great, but I wasn't very impressed with the magazine. There something about a psych magazine having full page adds for
- "Psychic Breakthrough: Amazing Mind Training System Installs Remote Viewing Skills. Travel Anywhere in Space or Time..." that make you wonder about crediblity. How much they get for those ads. Do they really need the money that bad? If the ads work... some of the readers go for the stuff... it seems ironic/wrong that Psychology Today is the one helping to advertise the crap. 07.18.2001
Here's some boring writing on my work (the work isn't boring it's just my writing). I spent a lot of today checking out web based chat room systems and web portal systems. There a lot of them out there!!! The problem is finding one that is does what you want. It's hard to tell which ones are good and which are crap. I started out looking at Sourceforge.net to see what there was in terms of opensource stuff. I was able to find several possiblities... nothing that looked like the perfect one, but I guess you can't really ask for that. I also looked at some commercial ones just to see what kind of stuff out there. From my bit of research I narrowed it down to two good possibilities. Then about half an hour ago I came across Hotscripts.com where they have a large collection of scripts/programs and reviews. Althougth there weren't many reviews, the ones there confirmed my choices. 07.17.2001
So do I just sit around reading articles like the ones I just posted. No... I actually do "real" work... sometimes. My latest project is checking out what it would take to run a real-time web chat room. It's for a youth oriented site, and the idea is that a chat room would get more people to the site. They'd like stuff like moderation, and guest speaker options. I'm a bit skeptical about whether this would actually work... would people actually come to the site to chat. Sure ICQ/AIM/MSN chat programs are popular, but that's more for individual/personal communcation. And depending on the people, it is often just small talk (but that gets into other issues). I've never been in a good group chat room with moderation or guest speakers... it isn't very appealing to me, but it would be good to know what it's like.
Here are some funny/interesting articles that I've read, all pointed out at fark.com. world wife-carrying contest "Using their trademark spouse-toting hold, an Estonian couple have trounced the competition to win the world wife-carrying title for a fourth consecutive year.....The woman in the so-called "Estonian carry" squeezes her thighs on the sides of the man's face and holds on to his waist while hanging upside-down along his back. This leaves the man's arms free to swing as he runs along the 253.5-metre (yard) course." Note that it doesn't have to be your wife... just a woman over 17... because it is linked to a legend of a gang that stole their rivals wives. For some reason I don't think the "Estonian carry" would work if the "wife" unless the wife wanted to be stolen. Oh well... must be fun to watch. Meet the cheapest people of the year I've got one I think few can match... leaving kleneex out to dry so you can reuse it (No names, but for those of you that don't know me... it isn't me that does this). Sliced Peanut Butter I don't think I'd want this. It just seems wrong. Processed cheese is bad enough. 07.16.2001
Save Your Site From Spambots. I actually haven't had major problems with spam, but I've heard the horror stories, and I'd like to keep it that way. 07.15.2001
Why can't Johnny respect copyrights? (Salon). Britain elementary schools preparing to teach necessity of intellectual property laws.
I've been working on a new design for my weblog. For now it can be found here. I got some "inspiration" for the design from Jay's design semistatic. I sent an email to him asking if he was okay with me using my design... hopefully he doesn't feel like I've ripped off his work. Goyer has a new digital camera and has started a photo album using IDS (Image Display System). Makes me really wish I had a digital camera. I've got a nice Canon Rebel 2000 that I should really use more... but it's not a convenient as a digital one. And the quality of digital cameras has really improved... and will probably continue to do so. Check out this article about the digital vs. film debate. |
