My meeting with Paul went well. Everything seems to be working smoothly. He thinks there might be some problems with the one setup he was using and he might not have had completely updated phormation code. He had some suggestions for some new features to add to phormation, so that will give me a little work to do. 06.14.2001
I didn't get very much coding done today, but I did get quite a few things on their way to being straighted out. I made an appointment with the Grebel accounts so they can answer some of my questions about the interaction/procedures with student council. I posted a thing on PHPBuilder about my php/odbc problem. There haven't been any replies yet, which is dissappointing. I had a Peaceworks meeting from 3:30 to 6. That's the longest meeting I've had for Peaceworks, but it's all informal and actually sort of fun. Paul is still having problems with some Phormation stuff that he is using, so I'm going over to the lab tomorrow morning to try to help figure things out. Hopefully it's nothing major. Everything seems to work fine on the testing I've done here at home. After the meeting I went over to Grebel and hung around there until ultimate which was around 7. It was a good game, 5 on 5. A lot of running. I was having my coughing problems which happens to me when I'm running a lot. It hadn't bothered me any of the other days, but today was pretty bad. I think it could be because I was getting a bit sick earlier in the week (slightly sore throat, and runny nose). But I think I'm getting better, and the coughing has stopped, so that's good. I'd better get to bed. Gotta actually make sure I'm up by a certain time. It's been gettting warm, and it's been taking me a while to get to sleep. Oh, I should also appoligize to Matt for not telling him about the Live in Toronto thing that was happening at the Edge today. I noticed it the other day but figured he'd be all over that. It turns out he wasn't, and neither were his girlfriend and roommate, who are all big Ani fans. But I think they do have tickets for her thing tomorrow, wherever that is. 06.12.2001
I decided to get myself more familiar with Access, so I'm building a database to keep track of the Conrad Grebel student council banking stuff. I figured it could be useful since I'm was treasurer last term and will be again next fall/winter. I've been looking a web design stuff. Seeing a lot of this Jeffery Zeldman guy. I found a link for istockphoto at his site and it looks very cool. Lot of good free stock photos. 06.10.2001
Didn't get much done yesterday. I spent a while looking for log analyzing software to help me anaylize the incredible amount of hits I'm getting :) I ended up going with awstats. In the evening I went to Kickoff with John (one of my housemates) to watch to hockey game. While there I had my first beer (I'd had a taste of someone else's once, didn't like it, and never got one of my own). I decided to give it a try. Again I didn't really like the taste. I hear people say it's an acquired taste, but I haven't decide if it's one I want to acquire. Today has been another uneventful day. I'm checking out several cool mp3 players. John has an Archos, and one of the cool things about that one is that you can store any file type on it (not just mp3). So it can be used as a portable hard drive to backup/store any of your files. The Treo looks promising, and I've read that they are thinking of bumping it up to 10 gigs. The pjb-100 now comes with either 6 or 20 gigs, but it quite a bit more expensive than the others.
It's been a little while. Friday I spent some time doing research for my new project for work. I've been calling it auto-phormation because we haven't really given it an official name. It's all going to be opensource stuff so I guess it doesn't matter if I explain the idea. Basically I creating a program which you'll be able to point at a database, and it will create an admin site using php/phormation that lets you view/edit/add/delete stuff from the database. I've got a general idea of what I need to do. I need to get the table names and field names/types for the database, and then write the php that will write the php/phormation for the admin site. It seems pretty straight forward but there aren't any SQL statements that get this information, so I need to figure out how to do this for different types of databases (MySQL, Postgress, Oracle, ODBC stuff). I found the functions that I need for MySQL and ODBC, and decided I'd try out the ODBC stuff because I have Access and ODBC all set up on my computer. But I kept running into weird cgi errors when I called the functions I wanted to use. I hacked at the code for a while trying to figure out where the error was occurring and I finally narrowed it down...but it makes no sense. I function call works fine a couple time, and then stops working. Maybe if I have time I'll put the code up here later. I hate it when I know how to code something, but then run into stupid problems. It's very frustrating. Oh well, at least on Friday night I was able to watch the Sixers vs. Lakers game on our one TV channel. Too bad the Sixers lost. They put up a good fight. (Note: I'm from Akron, PA a little over an hour from Philly, so the Sixers are my hometown team. Sorry Toronto :) In case I haven't told you already, we lost our cable a week or two ago, and now only get one channel. We were getting free cable since we moved in, and figured they just didn't care about turning it off. But now I think they gave it to us for a month hoping to get us hooked. |
