[Previous entry: "Thursday"] [Main Index] [Next entry: "Bad Blogger"] 07/03/2001 Entry: "Long weekend" A lot happened on the weekend... to much to write about in one go... so I'll just highlight some stuff. Overview: Friday: Went to Sarah's birthday party, Del Dante's for supper and then her house for cake and talking. Saturday: Drove to Ottawa with Ariana, Travis and Pemma. Met group at and stayed at John-eric's place. Wandered around Ottawa. Sunday (Canada Day): Went to John-eric's church. John Shmidt brought up the interesting fact of how much more nationalistic it was than Mennonite churchs. They even sang part of O Canada but just verse 4 less nationalistic than the others. Relaxed in afternoon. When downtown and waited for fireworks. Met up with a large group of Grebel people. It was really windy and the fireworks were cancelled :( . The street was a sea of people afterwards, as everyone wandered around looking wondering what to do. They had lots of police around and no rioting took as far as I could tell. Just a lot of people joking about stuff, one of which was that the Americans stole the fireworks so people should storm the embassy :) . But it didn't happen, probably because people were afraid of gettig shot down :) . Monday: Said goodbye to most of people in morning, hung out with John-eric, Victoria, and Travis for afternoon. Drove home with Ariana, and Travis in evening. ....More.... Friday: I wore my borrowed dress stuff to Sarah's and was one of the most dressed up people there. Hung out at Sarah's for a bit and then slept over at Ariana's so we could leave early in the morning. Hardwood floors are not great for sleeping on... my sleeping bag helped a bit. We thought it would be cool to leave that night at like 12 or something, so we'd miss traffic and everthing, but we had to pick up Pemma in Toronto, so that didn't work. Saturday: Got up at around 7:30 and ended up leaving at about 8:20. We got to Toronto great, but then it took a long time picking up Pemma. The plan was to meet her at Indigo in Yorkdale Mall, which was right of the 401. So we say the mall from the highway and even the Idigo sign, and when we got of the exit there weren't any signs to direct us to the mall. We ended up wandering through some residential streets, and hit a dead end before finally finding the entrance, but then as we went around the mall they took us right back out to a road leading back onto the highway. Eventually we met got in the mall, and met Pemma. We ended up spending a bit of time in the mall, as we needed to wait for Fido to open at 10 so Pemma could get a phone card. Finally we got back on the road again, only to find that traffic had gotten very bad. We ended up waiting in stop and go traffic for probably 45 minutes, and then decided to get off the highway and take the backroads. Overall this was a good decision. Although the roads were wyndy, there wasn't nearly as much traffic, so we could go at about 100 km/hr. Plus it felt like we were making more progress, the scenery was nicer, and we didn't have the heat and pollution of 8 lanes of traffic. We ended up picking up Ariana's friend in Kinata, before getting to the John-eric's a bit before 5. We ate at Baxtor's, I got the smothered steak. Then in the evening we wandered around downtown Ottawa, went to the market, saw the parlement buildings. It started to rain, so we came back to John-erics fairly early. I slept in a tent with John Shmidt. There was another tent with some others, a few people slept in John-eric's room, and some in one of the vans. Sunday (Canada Day): Got up early. Too many people to get a shower. Robyn took 20 minutes in bathroom, which left little time for most other people. In the evening when we went downtown we were going to meet up with Jamie, a guy John-eric knows, at the National Defence Building (were John-eric works). But he never showed up. We didn't have his cell phone number, and the Victoria's cell phone's batteries were dead, which was the only number he had for us. While we were waiting we did some face painting and threw a frisbee around. Eventually Joel W. threw the frisbee in into the street, almost hitting some cars, so frisbee ended. Then Travis light one of his firecrackers next to the building, causing a police officer to come over. He talked to Walter Froese, but didn't do much. Travis was't aware that we were at the National Defence Building :) .
